Our campout this month was at Starved Rock. We had a good turnout for the outing and had a good time. The place was WET! There had ben a lot of rain prior to our trip and the river was so high that the parking lot was flooded about 5 feet high. The water came all the way up to the steps of the tourist center and we had to park up by the lodge to go hiking. At one point, the water was all the way up over the bridge, and we had to cross the bridge on the railings to get across (it was calm water, so we did not do anything unreasonable, and the trail was open, in spite of the high water). We hiked five miles and all up and down the bluffs. It was a really nice day. We had lunch at the halfway point on the hike and were ready for dinner by the time we got back to camp. Some of the new scouts worked on their fire starting skills and did a nice job, while a couple of the older scouts had a very hard time getting their fire going. It was a bit rough finding dry tinder and kindling after all that rain.

We are inviting any Webelos II boys who are interested in our Troop to come join us with their parents on a campout at Camp Lakota, in Woodstock IL. This cabin campout is an excellent opportunity to meet the boys of our Troop, and see how we run an actual outing. We will depart from Goodrich School on Friday evening (November 21st), and return early Sunday afternoon (November 23rd). We will be available to talk with parents about any questions they may have about the Troop, and our Patrol Leader Council will have activities planned which will be typical of what you might expect of our Troop. The cost is $10 per person.
Please contact our Scoutmaster if you are interested in attending or if you have any questions. He can be reached at (630) 435-1533 or you can email him at scoutmaster @ our-troop.com with any questions. If you would like to see our Troop before deciding, please feel freee to come to any meeting; the locations and times are all on the calendar on this webpage.

We camped at Greene Valley in September with Pack 511 from Woodridge. The Troop arrived Friday night and got ready for the Pack's arrival Saturday afternoon. The scouts prepared a great campfire program for the Cub Scouts and cooked an interesting array of dutch oven desserts to go with the s'mores that the Pack prepared. The weather cooperated wonderfully and everyone seemed to really enjoy the weekend.

We started this canoe trip at 10:15 a.m. and we canoed for 10 hours. The reason for that was that the course was 15 miles long. It was an adventurous trip because a person fell out of their canoe, another canoe was swamped, and three paddles were lost in the river, but later found. Some people saw an eagle catch a fish. The weather was beautiful. On Sunday, we packed up and played jump the boarder. It was a great trip.

Well, another great week of summer camp...
We had 15 scouts at summer camp this year (out of a total troop membership of 16)! The weather was perfect throughout the week and we had a great time. The scouts earned a ton of merit badges (33 completed and a mess of partials) and over 30 T-2-1 requirements were met and signed off. Mr. Collins did a great job heading up the Taste of Madron entry of ribs and barbequed Cornish Hens and the scouts did a nice job of representing the Troop at the water carnival on Friday. The OA Tap Out ceremony was very cool as well. Thanks again to the leaders who spent time at camp to make the week possible and thanks to our drivers for getting us to and from the camp.

The Patrol

From the BSA website
The patrol is a group of Scouts who belong to a troop and who are probably similar in age, development, and interests. The patrol method allows Scouts to interact in a small group outside the larger troop context, working together as a team and sharing the responsibility of making their patrol a success. A patrol takes pride in its identity, and the members strive to make their patrol the best it can be. Patrols will sometimes join with other patrols to learn skills and complete advancement requirements. At other times they will compete against those same patrols in Scout skills and athletic competitions.
The members of each patrol elect one of their own to serve as patrol leader. The troop determines the requirements for patrol leaders, such as rank and age. To give more youths the opportunity to lead, most troops elect patrol leaders twice a year. Some may have elections more often.
Patrol size depends upon a troop's enrollment and the needs of its members, though an ideal patrol size is eight Scouts. Patrols with fewer than eight Scouts should try to recruit new members to get their patrol size up to the ideal number.
